Tracing the Hollaway line

April 2020

I started researching my family tree earlier this year using Ancestry.com. I’ve decided on the following approach:

  • Taking each of my four grandparents in turn, I’ll try to identify all of their ancestors intially going back four generations. My four grandparents each come from a different part of England, and I’ll use newspaper archives and the internet to try to find as much as I can about them, who they were, what they did and where they lived.
  • I’ll also try to find the descendents of some of these ancestors and hopefully find new living relatives. This will be more difficult as birth, marriage, death and census records are not available on Ancestry.com for the past c80 years. I did a DNA test through Ancestry.com which has brought back some results I can investigate (three 3rd cousins). I’ve already found new relatives, a second cousin once removed (Hi Lynda!) and a fifth cousin once removed (Hi Robert in Perth, Australia!).
  • Finally I’ll take the Hollaway line as far back as I can. Currently I’ve traced it back to the mid-1650s, which can be seen here.

I decided to create this website as it makes it easier to share information and photos as I go. If anyone has any information or photos that they can share, please get in touch at: slow_on_the_uptake <at> yahoo.co.uk.

Firstly, here’s my immediate family.

Grandparents Ken and Joan Hollaway, had two children, Diana and Derek.

Grandparents George and Peggy Jermy, had two children, Roger and Sheila.

It gets a bit complicated now, Diana married Roger, and Derek married Sheila. Interestingly, Diana and Derek’s great-grandfather did the same thing (married his sister’s husband’s sister).

I can’t work out how to display this very easily in a family tree, so have split into 2…

Derek & Sheila had three children, Andrew (me), Sally and Joanna

Roger & Diana had two children, Kate and Emma.

The first grandparent’s ancestors I’ve researched is my dad’s dad, Kenneth Hollaway.

12 April – After asking for help on a genealogy facebook page, Helen in Whitstable got in touch with me – she lives opposite the Plough pub in Whitstable where my fourth great grandfather worked. She very kindly went on a tour of Whitstable taking photos of the houses in Whitstable where my ancestors lived, which I’ve uploaded to the site today. Thanks Helen!

I’ve also added some new info to the “Kens’ other relations” section – to show the relationship to Robert Holloway in Perth, Australia. Robert informed me that Ernest Holloway Oldham, my fourth cousin, 3 times removed had a very interesting story, so I’ve added this to the same page.
